WATSAN is the Water, Waste and Sanitation Unit of the Ministry of Infrastructure Cook Islands and is designed to safeguard the environment and improve the delivery of water, waste and sanitation services to the citizens of the Cook Islands.
We were established in 2011 to focus on the protection of the Cook Islands unique environment; especially our fragile lagoons and at the time was mainly established as a starting point for the Waste Management and Sanitation Improvement (WMI) Programme.
The Unit has now expanded to officially include Water Works and Solid Waste Management alongside Sanitation.
The Government of the Cook Islands, with support from the combined New Zealand and Australian Aid Programme, is working on a range of initiatives to prevent pollution and protect the environment around the Muri Lagoon. Continue reading...
